Was prayer ever allowed in public school?

I went to public school K-12 (granted, it was a while ago), and never prayed in school. I hear a lot of banter about bringing prayer back into public schools. When/where did that ever happen?

School-sponsored prayer in public schools was ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court in two decisions issued by the Warren Court: Engel v. Vitale in 1962; and Abington Township School District v. Schempp in 1964.
