San Antonio Independent School District is preparing for college
San Antonio Schools held two college fairs as part of its GEAR UP program to help the class of 2012 preparing for college.
GEAR UP Fairs in the San Antonio area
Current sixth graders and their families participated College fairs at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Participants learned about college reference requirements, entrance exams, and how to find help financial. To add a little local flavor to the occasion, cheerleaders and school mariachi performed and a delicious meal.
GEAR UP
Gaining awareness early preparation for undergraduate programs (GEAR UP) is a federally funded grant available to states to increase the number of low-income students enroll in college. The grant provides funding for six years to promote a class of students in the preparation of school in sixth year twelfth year. Some arts funds go to scholarships for needy students.
GEAR UP not only for schools. The local businesses and community groups including those with religious affiliation, may be associated with local schools to provide information to college students. Each school or organization, without however, must equal federal dollars for the dollar, means that the contribution of non-federal funds must be at least 50 percent.
The selection of students
Art funds can be used in a variety of groups of students or focuses on a cohort or "students of priority." Each group must meet one of the following conditions:
• All students in a particular level in a school that is a participant in the seventh year which at least 50 percent of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch under the National Law School Lunch.
• All students in a given level residing in public housing.
priority students, the other hand, are students who are eligible to be counted in one of the following acts:
• The Law on Basic and Secondary Education, 1965 (Part 1)
• Free or reduced-price lunches under the National Housing Act, school lunches
• Assistance with the help of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (Part 1 of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act for the reconciliation of 1996)
Private schools also have the opportunity to participate if they meet the above conditions. Therefore, a local education agency must act on its behalf and is a teaching institute higher or a local educational agency is in charge of your finances. For private school students to participate, the school policy itself should also be a partner in the concession.
Opportunities for the San Antonio Independent School District
Quarter has much to gain from the art of creating, for students and their parents at the beginning of the process of making the School. Start through sixth grade, the program allows parents and students to progressively develop to carry out many responsibilities that come with the application and payment of the university. The class of 2012 is about to make a smooth transition to university education.
